2009 Significant Lifetime Achievement in Social Work Award

Nancy Hooyman

In selecting Dr. Nancy Hooyman, the committee found it difficult to capture all she has meant to the hundreds of social work educators, students, and colleagues she has touched throughout her long and illustrious career. Nancy Hooyman's leadership in gerontological social work has been singular and formative. Many agree that social workers are now prepared to work with older adults due to the strategy for educational transformation she created, which stands as a model of educational change. As impressive and impactful as it has been, Nancy's national leadership in gerontological social work goes well beyond her work with the Hartford Geriatric Initiative, to a wide range of associations, agencies, and initiatives. Her leadership and mentoring as an educator and scholar are further evidence of her extraordinary contributions. Alongside her myriad responsibilities, her scholarly productivity is enviable. As a leader, she has served on virtually every major national social work board in addition to her role as Dean Emerita of the University of Washington School of Social Work. As a foremost leader in social work and aging, her contributions are profound and significant—some would say legendary.

2009 Distinguished Recent Contributions in Social Work Education Award

Terry A. Wolfer

Dr. Terry Wolfer has made remarkable contributions in the short time since he finished his doctoral program at Chicago, and since coming to the University of South Carolina, but one of the most distinctive has been his leadership in developing and applying the use of decision cases in the teaching of social work practice. He has led in the development of this approach. His writing and editing skills have led to a number of responsibilities, including serving as editor of Arete, associate editor of Social Work & Christianity and serving on the editorial boards of the Journal of Social Work in End of Life and Palliative Care, and the Journal of Religion and Spirituality in Social Work--Social Thought. Dr. Wolfer has an exquisite ability to be both principled and pragmatic in dealing with academic challenges. He is a reliable and supportive colleague, who holds a high standard of excellence in his work and encourages others through mentoring and collaboration. His use of decision cases in teaching has made a significant recent contribution to social work education.

Presidential Award

Dean Pierce

Dr. Dean Pierce has received the presidential award in honor of his service to CSWE for more than 30 years. Throughout his career, he served CSWE in many capacities, including member and then chair of the Commission on Accreditation, site visitor, and member of the Board of Directors. As director of the CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation and Educational Excellence, his tireless and innovative leadership has shaped the Office to meet the demands for quality in accreditation, information technology, and research. He provided invaluable wisdom and insight as a new Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (2008 EPAS) was shaped, debated, and implemented. The President’s Award is presented to an individual in recognition of significant contribution to the advancement of social work education and research.
