Social Work Students

There are more than 50,000 social work students enrolled in accredited social work programs across the United States and its territories. This includes 26,055 in BSW programs and 24,644 in MSW programs. Additionally, there are 1,396 in doctoral programs. Annually, there are approximately  29,000 graduates across the three program levels. More information about social work students can be found through CSWE research and initiatives described below.

Annual Survey of Social Work Programs

Each year, CSWE conducts a census of social work programs, gathering critical information about social work students, field placements, concentrations, financial aid, and graduates.

American Indians and Native Alaskans in Social Work Education

 The Native American Task Force conducted a study of the status of American Indians and Native Alaskans that included surveys of social work programs, faculty members, and practitioners, and focus groups with Native American students. A Final Report on the findings from the study is now available. The Task Force was chaired by Suzanne Cross, a CSWE Senior Scholar. (PDF)

Latino/as in Social Work Education

The Task Force on Latino/as in Social Work Education designed and administered a survey of social work programs in the Fall of 2006 to gather information about Latino/a students (applications, enrolled, graduates, and withdrawals) and program recruitment and retention strategies. A Final Report was accepted by the CSWE Board of Directors along with recommendations. Larry Ortiz chaired this Task Force.

Doctoral Social Work Students

Jeane Anastas, a CSWE Senior Scholar, conducted a survey of social work doctoral students in 2007 to gather critical information about experience in coursework, program resources, financial aid and debt load, and expectations for employment. A presentation of the findings was made at the 2008 Annual Program Meeting.
