The California University of Pennsylvania Social Work Department will design new gerontological training activities and embed them within four generalist courses and one special interest course on aging. Many of the experiential learning activities will take place in the classroom. Others will take place in a model rural community-based center offering educational opportunities, health care, activities, and state-of-the-art residences to older adults. The experiential learning activity in the Social Work Interviewing course will focus on conducting multiple interviews with healthy older teacher-mentor-adult volunteers by students as an extension of the normal education given in the class. The Social Work Policy and Social Work and Aging courses will offer opportunities for hands-on exercises that include senior led group discussions/deliberations on policy matters with students and a local policy expert. Critical questions of interest include whether students are more or less likely to pursue practicum assignments with older adults and/or careers working with older adults after engaging in the hands-on work with older adults.
