The University of St. Thomas/St. Catherine University BSW program’s BEL project will infuse and enhance current curriculum to highlight gero social work. Student experiential activities will include: interviews with elders, researching and networking with local advocacy groups, touring and networking with local agencies serving elders, lobbying with a local advocacy group, contributing to a gero website, and considering and in some cases choosing field placements working with elders. Principles that guide this project are that gero social work is a practice area that is growing rapidly and will offer employment opportunities to current students who can sustain and grow that field of practice; gero social work includes practice at all levels of generalist practice – micro, mezzo, and macro; and direct contact with elders and exposure to the gero-field will increase students knowledge and interest in gero-social work practice and their ability to work with elders whatever the field of practice.
