University of Mississippi

The University of Mississippi will conduct four experiential activities for the Cycle 2 BEL Program.  Through the project, students in the Human Behavior and Social Environment class will conduct oral interviews with elders to assess and compare the various types of support and the effects they have on aging in place. Students will have face-to-face contact with elders in diverse settings, such as day care, community meal settings, and long-term care facilities.  This activity will enable students to develop knowledge and skills in understanding what support systems enhance aging, and what additional resources elders and communities could utilize.  Students in the research class will conduct a needs assessment in selected rural communities regarding elder-friendly communities. This activity will enable students to develop knowledge of community interventions that would enhance the living situation of elders. Students in the Practice with Groups class will develop and conduct cognitive group activities with elders in a long-term care setting; this activity will provide students with the opportunity to develop knowledge of intervention designed to enhance the psychosocial functioning of individuals in residential services. Through the Practice with Organizations and Communities class, the gerontology class, and the student social work organization, students will also plan and participate in a day of service with elders.
