Norfolk State University’s BEL project will incorporate experiential learning activities into required social work courses by expanding the services provided to older adults through aging-related practicum placements, including the Brambleton Center. This project will expand programming for older adults with the assistance of students completing required courses and participating in the student social work club. In year 1, students enrolled in required research and methods courses will conduct a needs assessment to determine what services and activities older community residents feel the aging-related practicum sites should offer. Based on the findings, appropriate programming for older adults will be developed and delivered by practicum students. Also, practicum students will work with local agencies and older adults to create a resource manual for older adults living in Norfolk and surrounding areas. In subsequent years, students enrolled in the research and methods courses will be responsible for conducting process and outcome evaluations for Brambleton programming and for monitoring the necessity of program modification. Under the supervision of faculty and the assistance of Center personnel, practicum students will continue to deliver programming and to update the resource manual.
