Over the past ten years, progress has been made in increasing gerontological competencies in required generalist social work courses and advanced field work. Recruiting BSW and MSW students to gerontological social work, however, remains a great challenge nationwide. As a result, the number of graduates prepared to work with older adults cannot meet current and projected workforce demands.
Admissions personnel are in a key position to encourage students to consider course work, field placements, or careers in gerontological social work. The positive influence of Admissions personnel is vital since so many students have negative attitudes or misconceptions about work with older adults and their families.
