This new award was established in February 2012 to honor and recognize innovative teaching in social work education. Two recipients (or teams) will be awarded and recognized each year for outstanding contributions to social work education. The three themes identified for the 2012 awards follow.
- The use of cyber and communication technologies in education
- Education for reflective practice
- Promoting inclusion
These awards will be presented on Saturday, November 10 at 1:15 pm (Washington Hilton Hotel, Columbia Hall Rooms 5/6/7/8) before the 2012 APM Special Plenary begins. Learn more about the 2012 recipients and their innovations during the curriculum workshops they will present at the 2012 APM.

Workshop Title: Teaching Social Media for Professional Social Work Practice
Overview: Social workers need to be aware of and adept at using social media as part of their practice and interaction with clients of all system sizes. This workshop will inform participants about the mechanics as well as the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating social media assignments into BSW-level social work courses.

Workshop Title: Locating the “Minimum Spaces”: Creating Opportunities for Transdisciplinary Education
Overview: This workshop will focus on innovative approaches to educating reflective social workers for practice in a sustainable society, locally and globally. The experiential workshop will emphasize three related curricular constructs—transdisciplinary collaboration, Significant Learning (Fink, 2003), and service learning—and will incorporate a focus on social work’s environment paradigm.
