The Greying Elephant in the Room: Substance Abuse and Older Adults

$60.00

Duration: 42 min

In 2008, 13% of Americans were age 65 or older, and an estimated 17% of older Americans misuse or abuse alcohol or medications.

Social work students must develop the knowledge, skills, and self-awareness necessary to engage and treat this population.

This DVD follows a student through several sessions with an older adult who is misusing alcohol, then listens in on the student’s discussion of the case with her supervisor (S. Lala Straussner, DSW).

Teaching points are given for working with older adults who have problems with alcohol or other substances.

Funded by the Curriculum Development Challenge Fund, New York University, and the Dean's Research Fund, Silver School of Social Work, New York University. Caroline Rosenthal Gelman, Lynn McVeigh, S.
