MFP Plans for Upcoming Months

Spring Directors’ Meeting

MFP hosted a spring meeting with directors of the social and behavioral sciences minority fellowship programs at CSWE’s office last month. Representatives from the associations of nursing, psychology, sociology, psychiatry, education, political science, and marriage and family therapists participated in this follow up of the fall meeting hosted by sociology. The spring meeting focused on the combined efforts of the associations related to legislative advocacy with members of Congress for continued MFP funding. The meeting was also a time for networking among the directors.

Advisory Councils Meet

The SAMHSA and NIMH Advisory Councils met at the CSWE office in June to review new applications and renewals for both fellowship programs. Twenty-seven new applications and 12 renewals were reviewed for the SAMHSA Mental Health and Substance Abuse Fellowship Program. Seventeen new applications and nine renewals for the NIMH Underrepresented Mental Health Research Fellowship Program were reviewed. A total of 20 applicants were selected: 14 SAMHSA and 6 NIMH. The appointments of the newly selected fellows are contingent on the receipt of notices of grant award from both funding sources. We hope to finalize the next cohort in September.
