Values and Ethics

This Track welcomes proposals for novel and thought-provoking presentations, workshops, and panel discussions pertaining to values and ethics in social work theory, research, practice, and pedagogy. Topics of particular interest include the following:

  • Effective frameworks for analyzing and managing value conflicts and ethical dilemmas in social work with individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, governments, and other systems
  • Teaching methodologies, classroom exercises, and tools for evaluating ethics-related competencies (in furtherance of the 2008 Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards competencies)
  • Research on how social work students, practitioners, and agencies identify and deal with value conflicts and ethical issues in the classroom or the field
  • Analysis of current ethical issues related to globalization, technology, health care reform, poverty, immigration, grassroots movements (e.g., Occupy Wall Street), addictions, family violence, interprofessional conflict, evidence-based practice, political fragmentation, or particular diversity groups (based on ethnicity, race, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, disability, citizenship, etc.)
  • Essential history and theory of ethics and values in social work (what social work educators need to know to flourish as stewards of the profession)

Some presentations from this Track may be eligible to provide Continuing Education for participants requiring ethics and values credits.
