New Collection of Resources to Prepare Students for Specialized Practice in Substance Use Disorders

Published on : May 19, 2021

The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is proud to present new educational resources for accredited MSW programs that can be used to prepare future social work practitioners to deliver effective evidence-based substance use disorder prevention, treatment, and recovery services.

An extensive array of curriculum, assessment, and field education resources was developed to address the lack of a high-quality standardized curriculum in substance use and misuse. A school or program of social work may enhance coursework with competency-based curriculum tools, including the curriculum framework and four recorded plug-and-play modules and sample syllabi. Other individual resources will be highlighted in subsequent communications. All of the educational resources build on the nine generalist practice competencies in the 2015 CSWE Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.

CSWE extends its appreciation to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for providing funding, and to the schools of social work that participated in the CSWE Substance Use Disorder Expansion of Practitioner Education in Social Work initiative.
