New Social Work Futures Taskforce to Equip Educators, Students for Tomorrow’s Challenges

CSWE has announced the launch of its Social Work Futures Taskforce (SWFT). SWFT will help shape the future of social work education and practice, preparing educators, students, and institutions to meet the rapidly evolving needs of communities in the 21st century.

Formed through a collaboration of leading social work scholars and CSWE members, SWFT will explore the key trends transforming the profession—from technological innovation and workforce shifts to global issues like climate change, health equity, and social justice. SWFT’s mission is to ensure that social work education remains forward-thinking, inclusive, and responsive to the complex realities facing future practitioners. Its chief aim is to contribute to a robust futures ecosystem linking education and practice while cultivating deeper imagination, vision and responsiveness to a changing world.

“Social work is at a critical juncture,” said Dr. Halaevalu Vakalahi, CSWE’s President and CEO. “We’re witnessing profound social and technological changes that demand new ways of thinking, teaching, and serving. Our goal is to equip educators and students not only to adapt, but to lead.”

Over the next 18 months, the Futures Taskforce will:
  • Identify emerging trends, skills, and technologies shaping the field and specifically social work education in the form of a Futures Observatory effort for the profession
  • Develop recommendations for curriculum innovation and faculty development, starting with an effort to explore the future(s) of social work field education
  • Create resources that help programs integrate equity, ethics, and evidence-based practice into a digital and global context
  • Engage students and educators in nationwide dialogues about the future of social work
SWFT will release a report and training module on the future(s) of social work for social work educators and/or students in late 2026. Both will offer actionable strategies for schools, partner agencies, and professional organizations.

“Tomorrow’s social workers must be innovators, advocates, and collaborators,” said Laura Nissen, Chair of the Futures Taskforce. “This initiative ensures that our education prepares us to meet those demands with creativity and compassion.”

More information about SWFT will be posted at CSWE.org.
