The Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity & Expression, formerly the Commission on Gay Men and Lesbian Women, is a council of the Commission for Diversity and Social and Economic Justice. The council promotes the development of social work curriculum materials and faculty growth opportunities relevant to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and the experiences of individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or two-spirit. The council also works for the full participation of individuals who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or two-spirit in social work education, facilitating mentorship of students and junior faculty who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or two-spirit and offering assistance and consultation to educators and students concerning issues of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
 

Charge From the Commission

The Council on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity & Expression shall have the following functions:

  1. To further the creation and availability of social work education curriculum materials, resources, consultation, and faculty, student and professional development opportunities related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (including all of the associated individual, intersectional, and systemic issues) and the experiences of persons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.
  2. To identify and advocate for policies, procedures, and activities as well as recommend policy statements that advance inclusion and prevent impediments to full and affirming participation within CSWE, social work education, and social work practice for persons who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.
  3. To facilitate mentorship of doctoral students and junior faculty who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.
  4. To collaborate with other CSWE councils and commissions, national/international social work organizations, and national/international LGBTQIA organizations to promote the inclusion of those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, sexual-expansive, gender-expansive, two-spirit, and all others under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella within the profession of social work in furtherance of our charge.
