2026 Carl A. Scott Lecturer
CSWE is pleased to announce that Jerome H. Schiele, DSW, MSW, will deliver the 2026 Carl. A. Scott Lecture during the 72nd CSWE Annual Conference in Atlanta, GA, October 22-25, 2026.
Jerome H. Schiele, DSW, MSW
Dr. Jerome H. Schiele is Professor and Chair of the PhD/DSW Department in the School of Social Work at Morgan State University. A native of Hampton, Virginia, Dr. Schiele received his bachelor's degree in sociology from Hampton University, and attained both his master's and doctoral degrees in social work from Howard University, where he was a CSWE Minority Fellow. Dr. Schiele has over 35 years of higher education experience and has served in both faculty and administrative positions. Before arriving at Morgan State University, he was Professor and Dean of the College of Professional Studies at Bowie State University and a Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Social Work at the University of Georgia. He also has taught and served in administrative roles at Norfolk State Uniersity, Clark Atlanta University, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook.
Dr. Schiele’s research focuses on oppression and antiracism studies, social welfare history and policy analysis, and social work education. His scholarship appears in major academic periodicals and publications, and he is known mostly for his seminal contributions in the area of Afrocentric social work theory. Dr. Schiele also is author of the book, "Human Services and the Afrocentric Paradigm," editor of the book, "Social Welfare Policy: Regulation and Resistance among People of Color," and co-author with Dr. Phyllis Day of the book, "A New History of Social Welfare," 7th edition, which is being revised for a new 8th edition that will be published by Oxford University Press
