UConn SSW Researcher Receives CDC Grant for Social Media-Based Intervention in Gun Injuries
University of Connecticut School of Social Work assistant professor Caitlin Elsaesser has received a 2-year $250,000 K01 award from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to research how social media conflict contributes to youth firearm violence and develop a social media-based intervention to address this pressing issue. Elsaesser’s work is part of the first federal funding in 24 years to study firearm injury prevention. Elsaesser is one of two researchers in this cohort to receive a K01 award, early career development awards that provide intensive training and mentorship to develop the next generation of research leaders. CSWE Joins Call for Extending Student Loan Relief
CSWE joined several higher education associations in calling for an extension of the suspension of federal student loan payments, continuing 0% interestand the collection of defaulted loans. In March the Department of Education (ED) provided these reliefs, which were subsequently included in the CARES Act. ED again extended the measures through December 31, 2020. Read more.

The fifth call for applications for the Excellence in Interprofessional Education Collaborative Award is now open as the Interprofessional Education Collaborative and the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Officers Foundation for the Advancement of Public Health launch a new co-sponsorship. Applications close at 5:00 pm PST on Wednesday, February 3, 2021. The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) is seeking qualified social workers to write questions for the licensing exams used in the United States and Canada. Practicing social workers—item writers—write all the questions on the ASWB social work licensing exams. These writers are selected for their social work expertise and balanced to reflect diversity in practice area, geography, and demographics.
