Howard University Receives $1 Million Gift to Create Nonprofit Leaders Program
Howard University’s School of Social Work has received a $1 million gift from the family of activist, philanthropist, and the first executive director of For Love of Children, Fred Taylor, to create the Fred Taylor "Roll Away the Stone" Program. The gift and new program were announced during the 85th Virtual Celebration: Social Work Education, which honored Howard University's legacy of radical social justice, education, and advocacy. CSWE Promotes Key Research in the Media
CSWE President and CEO Darla Spence Coffey, PhD, MSW, spread awareness of key findings in CSWE’s recent National Workforce Initiative report in radio programs and podcasts in major markets across the country. She also used these interviews to educate listeners on how in-demand social workers are and how to get started in a career in social work. Election 2020: Wins All Around!
Before November 3 is too far in the rearview mirror, let us pause and celebrate the many positive milestones in the 2020 election. Voter turnout in the presidential race was more than 67%, with record-setting turnouts in many other races. Social workers, educators, and students played a key role in voter mobilization and promoting this key function of our democracy, whether through efforts such as the nonpartisan Voting is Social Work campaign or direct candidate support. Report Reveals Which Social Work Students Face Higher Costs
The costs to become a social worker are higher for Black/African American students than White students, according to a report released recently. The Social Work Profession: Findings From Three Years of Surveys of New Social Workers reveals findings from social workers completing their master’s of social work degrees, providing insights into their demographics, income, job satisfaction, and the clients and communities they serve. NORC and CSWE Partner on New Adolescent SBIRT Curriculum
NORC at the University of Chicago has partnered with CSWE to develop the free Adolescent Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Curriculum to assist social work educators seamlessly implement adolescent SBIRT training into their master's level programs. These free resources include an extensive learners guide, a four-part on-demand educational series, and a state-of-the-art online simulation training program for students.
ASWB Seeks Licensing Exam Writers
The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) is seeking qualified social workers to write questions for the licensing exams used in the United States and Canada. Practicing social workers—item writers—write all the questions on the ASWB social work licensing exams. These writers are selected for their social work expertise and balanced to reflect diversity in practice area, geography, and demographics. ASWB needs social workers from all categories of licensure with a variety of educational backgrounds and experience. Learn more and apply here.
Podcast: Informed Care in a School Setting
The University at Buffalo School of Social Work’s inSocialWork podcast, “Bridging the Gap Between Education and Social Work: ‘Plunge Into Buffalo’—Trauma-Informed Care in a School Setting,” features Stephanie Stodolka, LMSW. She discusses her street-level response to the personal, social, and environmental challenges to academic success faced by her school's children and families—and by extension, staff members.

GLS Campus Suicide Prevention Grant
SAMHSA is accepting applications for the Garrett Lee Smith (GLS) Campus Suicide Prevention grant program. The program’s purpose is to develop a comprehensive, collaborative, and evidence-based approach to enhance mental health services for college students, including those at risk for suicide and depression that can lead to school failure; prevent mental and substance use disorders; promote help-seeking behavior and reduce negative public attitudes; and improve the identification and treatment of at-risk college students so they can successfully complete their studies. Application deadline is Friday, February 5, 2021.
