Alexandria, VA – The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is pleased to announce the appointment of Derrick Kranke, PhD as the new Associate Editor of the Journal of Social Work Education (JSWE), beginning in August 2025.
Dr. Kranke's work has been published in PsychServices, Children & Youth Services Review, Health and Social Work, Social Work, and Qualitative Social Work. He received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award from Case Western Reserve University in 2010 and was recognized by the dean at the University of Southern California for Excellence in Teaching. He was elected to the Mandel School Hall of Achievement in 2018 and received the 2019 CSWE/SAGE Teaching Award for Innovation in Research Instruction. Dr. Kranke brings years of invaluable knowledge and experience in areas related to burnout, stigma, empowerment, and disaster relief.
“We are excited to have Dr. Kranke serve in this pivotal role as associate editor,” said JSWE Editor-in-Chief Dr. Michele Hanna. “I am looking forward to working with him as a thought partner as we move forward with our mission and vision at JSWE.”
The role of the associate editor is to support and assist the editor-in-chief as a final decision maker, collaborate with the editor-in-chief and senior production editor in identifying high-quality reviewers, promote JSWE when appropriate, and solicit potential authors. As a member of the JSWE Editorial Advisory Board, Dr. Kranke’s one-year term as associate editor will focus on supporting JSWE’s commitment to publishing cutting-edge research, promoting inclusivity, and addressing the complex issues facing social work education today.
Dr. Kranke is currently a lecturer at the University of Kansas School of Social Welfare and CEO at Burnout Restoration LLC. Prior, he was a health science specialist with the Veterans Emergency Management Evaluation Center, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (2013–2024). He earned his PhD at Case Western Reserve University. His scholarship has evolved from studying stigma and empowerment among adolescents and young adults with mental illness to military-connected populations.
